Ayrshire College, Kilmarnock

As well as being a campus built for the local community, large parts of the new Kilmarnock Campus have been built by local company, Character Joinery.
We were responsible for the bespoke joinery aspects of the campus – which included all of the booth seating in the Salt & Barrel café and the Refectory. We were also responsible for the manufacture of the teaching walls and reception desks in the main atrium and the library.
“We were also asked if we could get involved in a secondary school competition – in partnership with architects – Keppie Deisgn – where students designed seating pods for the College. Cumnock Academy students won the competition. We had a look at the winning designs, then the students had a day visit to our design office and workshops, where our joiners were building items for the College. After a brief chat talking to the students about how design evolves from initial concept to final manufacturing drawings, we began building.
It was really exciting to see the reaction of the competition winners when they saw the finished product. I think all involved in the student pods should be very proud of their achievements, as a really exciting design and build has been created.
When you think of all the greats from Kilmarnock and the surrounding areas – Alexander Fleming, Hugh McIlvanney, Sir Tom Hunter, not forgetting Johnnie Walker – it’s exciting to think that someone could be starting their own journey right now in the building.”
